The wedding garters were believed to have originated in the 14th Century when it was considered good luck for the wedding guests to obtain a piece of the bride's dress, even if this meant ripping the poor bride's dress to shreds !!
Thus developed bridal garters which were usually removed by the groom and tossed into the crowd - so preserving the bride's dignity !!
